Schroth Method

Nonsurgical option for scoliosis treatment

What is the Schroth Method?

The Schroth Method is a nonsurgical option for scoliosis treatment that was developed in Germany by Katharina Schroth in the late 1800’s. It uses specific exercises to return the curved spine to a more natural position. The goals of Schroth exercises are to de-rotate, elongate and stabilize the spine in a three-dimensional plane. This is achieved through physical therapy that focuses on restoring muscular symmetry, utilizing breathing techniques to expand the concave side of the body, and teaching postural awareness. A primary goal of Schroth is to prevent the scoliosis curve from progressing.

Schroth Method Outcomes

Outcomes of a Schroth program may include:

  • Improved posture
  • Improved core stability and strength
  • Easier breathing
  • Decreased pain
  • Improved movement pattern and function
  • Improved self-management and understanding of the spine

Treatment sessions will be tailored to meet an individual’s needs and programming will be refined as those needs change over time. Sessions may be administered weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly over the course of a year.
